Sales & Use Tax Compliance
Sometimes what seems like the easiest, most routine task can turn into a torrential downpour of problems. Monthly compliance reporting is one of those routine tasks that, when done incorrectly, can cost a business way too much. Collecting and remitting tax on non-taxable products and services is unfair to your customers. Collecting and remitting too little in sales tax puts you at risk when the state auditor comes knocking.
Often this “routine task” is given very little priority. Everyone has too much to do these days, and putting numbers in boxes on a monthly or quarterly basis isn’t much fun. Most often someone in the accounting department uses a spreadsheet, and last month’s tax rates, and last month’s report, to complete this month’s compliance. But if that’s what has been done for the last 10, or 12, or 22 months, you can bet that at least some of those numbers are wrong.
There are over 60,000 sales and use tax codes and statutes. Every state is different and they can make changes on a daily basis. It’s a full time job to keep up with the rules and regulations.
